It has been an interesting month in Cyprus, although not the best month for photos. The month started off with a mini shoot for my school, pictures of computers for a new Accountancy course, but off course my first love is photographing people, so I took a fair few of the staff and students. I did cover for a full time English teacher too which turned into quite a challenge for two weeks. The main difference was that I taught children, which is a new experience. They are full of life, harder to control, more affectionate, and full of questions. They are also better students, and one in particular challenged my knowledge! The regular teacher runs a tight ship and that was the hardest aspect for me, keeping them under control. The first lesson was quite hilarious, with the students informing me of their usual routine, I had to explain I wasn't able to be the other teacher and they would have to trust me. After that first lesson things went well, and they adopted a new class name, Mr Sinan's Boffins, and we would hi five for good answers. By the end, we were fast friends and I promised to visit them at some point. I see a bag of chocolate in their future, or maybe ice-cream.
Had a nice dinner with Sidika and Yannos, Naci and Elias. We met at the Soulist and ended up chatting to the band that was on later, during their sound check. Really nice people. Then I had a job at the bar I have done a couple of gigs for, Papa Bar Nicosia. It was Turkish pop night, which is a new experience for me.
Beyond that I had a nice night out with my students, two of which are my bosses, at Papa Bar, they were curious to see it. I really am getting on well with them and this is the third social thing we have done together at their invitation. I am really enjoying their company, including a night at one's house, we were meant to watch game of thrones but ended up drinking beer with their friends (nice people) in the garden till the small hours. I got on with one guy in particular, a gamer, who had an interesting theory about the world, namely we are in a simulation that helps the real world predict the future. We touched on religion, philosophy and more, which was pretty hard with my limited Turkish and their limited English. Good night though. As was the Papa Bar night, I was driven, so got quite drunk on Zivinia, a vodka like drink made from grapes. Puts hairs on your chest.
I also wondered around Kyrenia Castle and took some photos as something to change the routine. I met a nice dog in the Boat Museum inside, which was a surprise, but its shelter from the heat. He let me know he was harmless. Finally I wnet to the wednesday market again today, which sort of completes the project, a full year at the market.
