Cyprus April and May 2018

April

So its been another eventful time in Cyprus. I've been getting into Instagram and trying to sort my social media.  It keeps changing so much.  In terms of Cyprus I have had a lot going on, including applying as a photography teacher at the American University.  Again we will see.  So I have a pregnancy shoot lined up soon with the lovely Sidika, she's become a good friend and is nearing the eight month mark.  We have booked into a children's indoor play area for the shoot.  That is here directly below.  We met in the summer when I was here for a month via my cousin Naci and I covered her birthday party which was nice.  She in turn invited us for dinner as a thank you.  Now we are fast friends.  We hooked up recently at the monastery restaurant and I bumped into the nice barman (right side below Sidika) who is into photography, mainly night sky pictures at the moment.

Later that day went with Elias, who lives with my cousin, to feed his cats.  He has about 30 of them, some more his than others, but it is a wonderful thing to see feeding time. They keep first aid kits too and its really nice to see the care the cats are given.  Below with a few shots.

The shot below is from the Kantara Castle trip.  Its not that great, but it does show something.  The foliage looks like it has little flowers or something blooming, but in fact they are thousands of midges reflecting the sun. It was so thick on the day you had to keep your mouth closed.

The week before was reggae night at The Roots Bar, which is a great place by the sea.  Lots of Ex-Pats hang out there and made friends with one of the guys that runs it, named Ashley.  He's been here since his teens but is now 30.  It was his celebration night and I took a few pictures.

I did a favour for a friend and was rewarded with a trip to the Salamis Ruins in Cyprus where we took some photos. Very interesting place.

Beyond that I have been back to the Wednesday Market, which is becoming a bit of an addiction in terms of photos so instead of repeat posting I have made a projects album.

 May

Gosh. Where to start.  Well had a lovely meal at my friend's Sidika's house, proper mangal barbie with good company.  Her house is far from anywhere and therefore very peaceful, the mountains behind and the sea in front.  Elias was in charge of the mangal , and Naci made up all the food and even baked.  I then helped scrub the barbie dishes to the amazement of Sidika.  She was so impressed at our looking after her (she is 7 months pregnant) , she invited me to lunch in the week which was properly nice, and I left with berries and lasagne, and home made chilli.  Photos below.

Spent a Sunday at Akdeniz Beach and had some nice seafood nearby.  Many african students were enjoying the nearly empty beach.

Next stop was a greek side tour firstly to the lovely mountain village of Lefkara, which is famed for its silver production and unique embroidery on cloths.  There was a lovely man there pictured below that had a scouse accent, despite being in Cyprus for 38 years.  He came over to play football and stayed.  Lovely guy.

Nice Cafe lady that makes a mean milkshake, the smile I think is from surprise that I wanted her photo.  Everyone in the village was very welcoming and a real Cypriot vibe.

Then it was onto a fish restaurant for lunch.  It was huge place, with no less than 20 other restaurants nearby.  Our place could easily serve 400 people.  Amazing place.

Then it was onto a discount food store if you can believe that, then onto the lovely beach and seafront in Larnaca.

Full Moon on our return to the Turkish side.

So I know this is turning into a monster post, but this is what happened this week.  There was a bank holiday for May 1st so I got invited for a day out by my cousin.  We went to the old town in Nicosia and did many things.  First was a walk around.

A lot of the areas has these emblems left over from older times

Then we went a bit deeper, to the markets and artist area that runs along the border to the greek side, lots of wall art and the like.

We hung out at the Possible cafe and met a nice Indian fellow, who let Elias play the guitar.  Check my Instagram if you want to hear him play flamenco.

Above the amazing coffee shop girl that put up with our nonsense with grace.  She is usually behind the camera and was shy.

Amusing for such a conservative country

Finally on the way back we popped into friends of Naci doing a Tango Class, before catching a Reunite Cyprus Protest on the way to the car.

The following day met up with Sidika in Girne town.  She helped me get my camera fixed (one of my lenses had lost two screws and was in danger of coming apart) and we visited a crystal shop and met up with her friend for dinner at a lovely seaside restaurant.  This is her with the view we had whist eating behind.

This helpful guy tried to find screws for my camera but alas nothing fitted quite right and we almost completely bust the lens.  I got a contact though and hope to have the lens fixed tomorrow.

 And Finally...

Great news, I have an interview at the arts University I applied for.  So this week I met my cousin whom I haven't seen in 25 years.  She looks just the same and is getting married on June 2nd and I will be covering the wedding.  I remember playing the card game Donkey with her, if you loose you have to bray like a Donkey from the front door.   CousinCousinPhotos by Sin Bozkurt©
