My exhibition at Rustem Kitap Evi is almost upon us with just 10 days to go before the private view.  

Seren from Lunar Entertainment will start the night off with a quick fire dance before drag artist Cosmo Mo Rose performs.  

Sixty photographs will be on show taken from 2009 till 2024 and will be centred around the backstage.  Off course some photos are not strictly back stage, more behind the scenes, with one or two performance photos and alternative portraits, including revelers.

It has been amazing to contact all the people in the photos where I felt there may be credit issues or nudity concerns, but in the main it has been very positive with some very nice conversations.

Life really is good.  Keep believing it.

So eventually there will be an online catalogue so those that don’t live in Cyprus can experience something of the exhibition.

Sin Bozkurt's Backstage exhibition offers us two different backstage experiences. In some photographs, we visit the intimate moments of performers backstage. These photographs reflect the moments when the artists, who take part in a collective discipline on stage, return to their essential selves or transition there before or after the show. We are witnessing an intermediate period in which they reveal their true identities behind the masks that their roles impose on them. On the other hand, some photographs show moments when artists move away from traditional gender roles and express themselves freely. In other words, Bozkurt has managed to emphasize not only the preparation phase of the performance, but also the moment of people's transition to performativity in the images he captures. On the other hand, many photographs taken in private clubs present us with a different backstage where his subjects enjoy uninhibited physical expression, far from social norms. These are “free” places where people can get away from their daily roles in society.

“The stage shows, the backstage hides... However, if you stay on stage long enough, the backstage moves to the stage. As a matter of fact, the backstage is revealed during the first break, but we are among the lucky viewers who can see it, it is not actually seen/shown. We cannot say, "The real world is there," because the truth left us long ago, when we became involved in the 'show'. The backstage is a place of chaos” (Guy Debord, Society of the Spectacle)

Sin Bozkurt’un Backstage (Sahne arkası) sergisi, iki farklı sahne arkası deneyimini bizlere sunmaktadır. Bazı fotoğraflarda, gösteri sanatçılarının kulislerindeki mahrem anlarını ziyaret ediyoruz. Bu fotoğraflar, sahnede kolektif disiplin içinde yer alan sanatçıların gösteri öncesi veya sonrasındaki kendi özlerine döndükleri anlarını veya oraya geçiş anlarını yansıtmaktadır. Başka bir deyişle rollerin onlara dayattığı maskelerin ve kalkanların ardındaki gerçek kimliklerini sergiledikleri bir ara döneme tanıklık ediyoruz. Diğer yandan, bazı fotoğraflarda ise sanatçıların geleneksel toplumsal cinsel rollerden uzaklaştıkları ve kendilerini özgürce ifade ettikleri anlar görülmektedir. Başka bir deyişle, Bozkurt, performansın yalnız hazırlık aşamasını değil, kişilerin performativitiye geçiş anını da vurgulamayı başarmıştır yakaladığı resimlerde. Öte yandan, özel kulüplerde çekilen birçok fotoğraf ise toplumsal normlardan uzak, özgür bedensel ifadelerin sergilendiği farklı bir sahne arkasını bizlere sunmaktadır. İnsanların toplum içerisindeki günlük rollerinden sıyrıldığı o özgür mekanları.

"Sahne gösterir, sahne arkası saklanır… Ancak sahnede yeterince kalınırsa sahne arkası sahneye taşınır. Nitekim sahne arkası ilk molada ortaya çıkar, ancak biz orayı görebilen şanslı izleyicilerdenizdir, gerçekte orası görülmez/gösterilmez. “Gerçek dünya oradadır” diyemeyiz, zira gerçek bizi uzun zaman önce, ‘gösteri’ye dâhil olduğumuzda terk etmiştir.
